Before you start
GPX Edit Pro is a GPS track editor that runs in your browser. It is used to prepare a route before you leave, and to fix a file recorded on your return.
Three things to know
No account needed. Open the page, work, download your file. Nothing to create, nothing to remember.
Your files never leave your computer. All work is done in your browser. When you import a track, it is not sent anywhere: it is read locally. Two exceptions, and only when you trigger them yourself: route calculation queries a routing server with the points you place, and elevation correction queries a terrain model. In both cases, only coordinates are sent, not your file.
Nothing is saved. This is the counterpart of having no account: if you close the tab, your work disappears. Export before you close. This is the only really costly mistake you can make with this tool.
A track exists only in the open tab. Until you click 💾 Export and retrieve the file, it is nowhere else.
A little vocabulary

What you need
An up‑to‑date browser — Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari — on computer, tablet or phone. The tool is usable on a phone, but preparing a long route is more comfortable on a large screen. The chapter On phone details the differences.
Your first track, in eight steps
Goal: arrive on an empty map and leave with a GPX file on your disk. If you only read one chapter, read this one.
- Open the editor Go to the editor page. You see a map, a toolbar at the bottom of the screen, and nothing else. That's normal: there is no track yet.
- Go to the right area Click 🔍 Search in the bottom bar, type the name of a town or a place, choose from the list. The map moves there. You can also zoom with the wheel and drag the map to move it.
- Open the drawing tool Click ✏️ Draw, then choose 🛣️ Via routing. This is the mode that follows existing roads and paths. The other mode, Freehand, draws straight lines: it is only useful off‑trail.
- Choose your activity A banner opens at the top of the map. Click the profile that matches: 🥾 Hiking (paths) for walking, 🚴 Road cycling, 🚵 MTB (trails), and so on. This choice determines which paths the tool is allowed to use.
- Click on the map The first click sets the start. Each subsequent click adds a waypoint, and the route calculates itself between the two, following the paths. Wait for the segment to appear before clicking the next point — the indicator at the top changes from ⏳ to 🗺️ when it's done.
- Save When the route suits you, click ✔ Confirm. The track then enters the 📋 Tracks list and appears in colour on the map. Until you have saved, it does not exist yet.
- Check (optional) Click 📊 Analyze → 📊 Elevation profile. A graph appears below the map with distance, elevation gain and the terrain profile. This is the moment to realise that your "nice little loop" has 900 m of elevation gain.
- Export Click 💾 Export, leave the GPX format selected, then "Export now". The file arrives in your downloads. You can load it onto your watch, GPS or app.
Forgetting step 6. Without saving, the route remains a draft: it does not appear in the tracks list, and the export finds nothing to export.
The screen and its areas
The interface fits into five areas. Once you have spotted them, you won't look for anything else.
The toolbar, at the bottom
It is the starting point for everything. Ten buttons, from left to right:

The buttons 🛠️ Edit and 📊 Analyze open the same panel, on two different tabs. This panel can be moved by dragging its header, and the pin 📌 keeps it open while you work.

The tracks side panel
Opened by 📋 Tracks. It lists all your loaded tracks. Each line has a checkbox, the track colour, its name, its distance and its elevation gain. This is where you select the track you want to work on — most editing functions only work on a selected track.
At the bottom of the panel, seven actions: import, delete selection, clear all, multi‑select, select all, fit all (frames the map on all tracks), and search for a place.
The elevation profile, below the map
It appears only on demand. When you hover over it, a cursor follows your position on the map: you see where on the route each bump in the graph corresponds.
The map
A right‑click on the map opens a context menu: check the weather at that location, place a waypoint, make the track go through this point. On a phone, a long press replaces the right‑click.
Load an existing track

Click 📁 Import and choose one or more files. You can also drag files directly onto the map, which is faster when you have several.

Each loaded file becomes a track in the 📋 Tracks panel, with its own colour. You can load several and compare them.
A GPX file may contain several tracks. In that case they appear separately in the list, allowing you to keep only one.
From a share link
If someone has sent you a GPX Edit Pro share link, opening it loads the tracks directly into your editor. A banner indicates that it is a shared session. You can then modify and export them as your own.

Three ways, depending on what you are looking for.
🛣️ Via routing — follow the paths
When to use it. This is the default mode, the one that works in nine cases out of ten. You click two points, the tool finds the path between them by following the roads and trails actually mapped.
How. First choose your profile in the banner that opens, then click on the map. The first click sets the start 🟢, each subsequent click adds a waypoint 🔵, the last is the finish 🔴.
The seven profiles

Changing the profile mid‑draw is possible: already calculated segments do not move, the following ones use the new profile. This is how you prepare a mixed route.
Banner commands

A misplaced point can be fixed by dragging it on the map: the segment recalculates itself on both sides.
An indicator ⚠️ or ❌ almost always means that the point is too far from any mapped path — in the middle of a field, in a blank area of the map. Move it a few dozen metres onto a visible path.
Other case: two points separated by an obstacle that is impassable for the chosen profile. A hiking trail is not accessible to the Road cycling profile.
✏️ Freehand — draw by hand
When to use it. Off‑trail, in a kayak, on a beach, ski touring: anywhere the path you will follow does not exist on the map.
How. Each click adds a point, and the points are connected by straight lines. No calculation, no server: you decide the route.
Elevations are automatically retrieved from a terrain model at the time of saving, since a drawn track does not have any.
🔄 Auto loop — the tool finds it for you
When to use it. You are somewhere, you have two hours, you want to do a loop without going over the same place twice, and you don't feel like drawing it.
How. Set the start — 📍 On the map to click, or 🎯 My location. Choose the activity (hiking, gravel, MTB), set the desired distance with the dial, then Generate the loop.
The tool makes several attempts and keeps the best one. A "Attempt details" panel shows what it tried. If the result does not please you, Modify and retry keeps your settings.
This function is marked as beta in the interface. It gives good results where the path network is dense, and may fail in areas poor in trails. In that case, reduce the requested distance or move the start point.
Extend an existing track
Select the track, then ➕ Extend. The tool asks you which end — the start or the finish — then you click the continuation as for a normal route.
Only the added points receive an elevation from the terrain model. The altitudes of the original track are not affected: if they came from a barometer, they remain as they are.
Edit a track

All functions in this chapter apply to the track checked in the 📋 Tracks panel. If a button is greyed out, it means no track is selected, or several are needed.
Ctrl+Z undoes the last operation. Use it without hesitation: this is what allows you to try a simplification, find the result too coarse, and go back.
✂️ Cut a track in two

What it is for. Separate the outbound from the return, remove the approach kilometres by car accidentally recorded, split a long outing into two days.
How. Activate the function, then click on the track at the cut location. A preview shows where it will fall. Confirm: you get two independent tracks in the list.
To keep only a portion, cut twice then delete the unwanted pieces.
🔗 Merge two tracks

What it is for. Re‑join an outing that the watch cut in two, assemble stages prepared separately.
How. Check at least two tracks in the list — enable Multi‑select to check several — then Merge. A preview is shown before validation: the tool shows you the order in which it plans to chain them and where the junctions will be.
Itinerary mode
A Itinerary mode checkbox appears in the preview. Checked, it keeps each original track as a distinct segment inside the merged file. This is what you need for a multi‑day raid: a single file, but your GPS knows where stage 1 ends and stage 2 begins. Unchecked, everything is merged into a single continuous track.
↩️ Reverse direction

What it is for. You have recovered someone else's track who rode in the opposite direction, or you want to do the return of an outbound recording. One click, start and finish swap.
The elevation gain is recalculated: what was uphill becomes downhill. A route with 800 m of D+ and 200 m of D− becomes 200 m of D+ and 800 m of D−.
🔄 Loop

What it is for. Close a route whose start and finish do not quite coincide — the classic case of the GPS turned off fifty metres before the car.
The tool calculates the return to the start point by following the paths, with the active profile. If the gap is large, you may prefer to draw the closure yourself by extending the track.

What it is for. Only on a loop. You have a loop that starts from a parking lot, but you start from the neighbouring village that is on the route. This function rotates the start point along the loop without changing anything in the route.
How. Activate, click the new start on the track, confirm.
📉 Simplify — lighten an overly heavy file
🛠️ Edit → Simplify
What it is for. Watches record one point per second. A five‑hour outing produces 18,000 points. Many GPS devices refuse to load such a heavy file, or lag on it. Simplify removes points that do not contribute to the shape of the route.
How. A tolerance slider adjusts the aggressiveness, expressed in metres. A tolerance of 20 m means: "remove any point that deviates by less than 20 metres from the line its neighbours would form". The counter tells you in real time how many points will be kept.

Simplification also affects the elevation gain: fewer points means fewer micro‑variations counted, so a lower D+. This is normal, and often more accurate. But if your D+ collapses after simplification, you went too far — Ctrl+Z and start again more gently.

🏔️ Correct elevation

What it is for. You come back from an outing, you load the track, and the D+ shows 1,400 m while you know you did 900. This is almost always your watch's barometer: it measures pressure, and pressure drifts with the weather throughout the day. Over four hours, the error accumulates.
How. Select the track, launch the correction. The calculation queries a digital elevation model and compares its profile with yours. A progress bar is displayed; allow a few seconds to a minute depending on the length.
What you should see. The D+ approaches what you know of the terrain, and the profile keeps its shape — the small bumps and hollows remain.
Why we don't simply replace everything with the terrain model
That would be simpler, and that would be worse. Your barometer captures micro‑relief: a bank, a hedge, a passage under a bridge. The terrain model, on the other hand, is a grid: it gives an average altitude per cell, and these cells are hundreds of metres across. Anything smaller than a cell escapes it. By replacing point by point, we would lose the real relief and replace it with a smoothed approximation. The tool therefore corrects the drift of your sensor, it does not replace it.
An elevation gain that barely moves means that your track did not have barometric altitude initially. Tracks drawn by hand, for example, already get their altitude from the terrain model: there is nothing to correct.
Outside Europe, coverage is provided by a global model, which is less precise.
📏 Split by interval

What it is for. Automatically split a long track into regular sections: daily stages of a raid, or training series.
How. Choose the interval type — by distance (every 25 km) or by time (every 90 minutes, if the track is timestamped) — then the value. The tool produces as many separate tracks as needed.
⚙️ Reshape

What it is for. Finely adjust a track that runs next to the actual path — a GPS that drifted under trees, an old track on a redrawn trail.
How. Handles appear along the track. You drag them to move the route; neighbouring points follow smoothly. A slider adjusts the spacing of the handles: tight for precise work, wide for a general movement. ✔ Confirm validates, ✕ Cancel aborts.
This function does not exist on a phone. It requires a pointing accuracy that a finger cannot provide, and it is work you do calmly before leaving, not in the field.
📌 Edit points

What it is for. Point‑by‑point adjustment: delete an aberrant point, move a vertex, correct an isolated altitude. This is the finest level.
Each point becomes draggable on the map. Clicking on it gives access to its coordinates and altitude.
📍 Place marker

What it is for. Mark a point that is not on the track: the parking lot, a spring, the place to branch off. These markers are exported with the file and appear on most GPS devices.
Activate the function, click on the map, name the marker. It appears with a pin 📍. To remove it, click on it and choose 🗑️.
🗑️ Delete, and multi‑select
Delete (Delete) removes the checked tracks. Clear all empties the workspace.
Multi‑select allows you to check several tracks at once — necessary for merging or comparing. Select all (Ctrl+A) checks everything at once.
Analyze a track

📊 Elevation profile

A graph opens below the map: distance on the x‑axis, altitude on the y‑axis. The key figures are displayed above — total distance, D+, D−, minimum and maximum altitude.
As you move the mouse over the graph, a cursor moves simultaneously on the map. This is what allows you to say "the big bump in the middle is the pass before the village".
Ctrl+R resets the display if you have zoomed in.
🎨 Slope by color
📊 Analyze → Slope by color · Ctrl+P
What it is for. The profile tells you there is 900 m of D+. Slope by color tells you if it comes in one brutal ramp or spread over twenty kilometres. It's not the same outing.
The track is recoloured from green to red according to the incline. You immediately spot the sections where you'll have to push the bike.
🌍 Surface by color
📊 Analyze → Surface by color · Ctrl+U
What it is for. Know what you are going to ride or walk on: asphalt, compacted gravel, dirt, grass, rock. Decisive in gravel, where tyre choice directly depends on the proportion of path.
The tool reads the surface declared in OpenStreetMap along the route and displays the percentage breakdown.
Like any collaborative data, coverage varies. A path with no surface information appears as "unknown" — which does not mean it is bad, only that no one has described it.
☀️ Sunlight
📊 Analyze → Sunlight
What it is for. Know which portions of the route will be in the shade of the relief. In summer on a long exposed climb, or in winter in a steep valley, it changes the outing.
How. Choose the date of the calculation, then launch. The tool calculates the sun's position hour by hour and determines, for each point of the track, whether the surrounding relief masks it. The calculation is heavy: a progress bar details the steps.
The result colours the track according to exposure. A north‑facing slope in December stands out immediately.
The tool does not only account for the terrain: it also reads the mapped tree cover. On a wooded route it is usually the trees that steal the most sun, and the breakdown separates the two causes.
🎮 Simulate activity
📊 Analyze → Simulate activity
What it is for. Two distinct uses.
First, estimate a realistic duration: how long will this route take me, given the elevation gain and my level. Second, produce a timestamped file: a drawn track has no time, yet some software — especially those that overlay data on a video — require one.
How. Fill in the sport, your age, your weight, then the date and start time. A preview displays the estimated duration and speeds in real time. Generate: a new track appears, identical in geometry but timestamped, with simulated heart rate and cadence.
If you want to associate your track with a video, set the date and start time to those of the video recording. It is the absolute timestamp that allows them to synchronise.

What it is for. Decide between two variants of the same route, or measure the gap between what you planned and what you did.
Check at least two tracks, open the panel: distances, elevation gains and profiles are presented side by side.
🌤️ Weather
📊 Analyze → Weather · or right‑click on the map
Displays the forecast at the chosen location: temperatures, precipitation, wind, and sunrise/sunset times. Right‑click on the map gives the weather for a specific point of the route, which makes sense when crossing a mountain range.
Points of interest
📍 POI · Ctrl+O
What it is for. Find what you will need along the way: water, a bakery, shelter, a train station, a pharmacy. The tool queries OpenStreetMap and places the results on the map.
The two search modes

The search radius and distance from track are set with a slider. Widening gives more results but more distant ones: a fountain 2 km from your route will not be useful.

Eleven families, subdivided into about a hundred categories. Check what interests you; there is no obligation to display everything.

Make the track go through a point
A right‑click on the map, or on a found POI, offers 🔄 Go via this point. The tool recalculates the route to make a detour and tells you the extra distance. This is how you add the village bakery without redoing the whole itinerary.
Combine and merge
Two neighbouring functions that should not be confused.

Using the combiner

- Load the tracks Either ➕ Add GPX files from disk, or ➕ Add selection to reuse those already open.
- Generate 🔄 Generate loops searches for closed circuits achievable by chaining your segments.
- Choose The found loops are listed with their distance and elevation gain. You keep the one that suits you, and export it.
✕ Reset empties the list to start with another batch.
This is the tool for areas you know well: you have a dozen favourite segments saved, and you are looking for the combination that will make 45 km this Sunday.
River and seashore
A separate module, for kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding. It is activated by choosing the 🛶 Waterway profile in the drawing banner.
This is a preparation tool, for fair weather. It knows neither tide, nor wind, nor flow, nor any nautical danger. The coastal module follows the shoreline: it does not navigate offshore. Marine weather and river conditions remain entirely your responsibility.
Go down a river
Choose the 🛶 Waterway profile, then place your points as for a normal route. The calculation follows rivers, canals and navigable channels — not streams, nor ditches.
The direction of descent. The banner tells you the detected direction based on elevation gain: a descent, or an upstream paddle. An upstream paddle triggers a warning, because that is rarely what you want in a kayak.
Duration. It is estimated at an average paddling speed, indicated in the banner.
"No navigable route between these points" means that the network is interrupted between your two points: a non‑bypassable dam, a non‑mapped section, or two basins that do not connect. Move your points closer together or split the route.
🚧 Hazards
The Hazards button locates along the route what is mapped as weir, dam, rapid or lock. Each found hazard appears on the map; clicking gives its type, and its grade when available.
The message "No mapped hazards" does not mean there are none. It means that no one has entered them in OpenStreetMap. On a river, this nuance is vital: an unmapped dam is still a dam. Recognise the route by other means.
🚗 Return shuttle
A descent does not loop: you arrive downstream, the car is upstream. The Shuttle button calculates the road route between the finish and the start, and gives you the distance and driving time. Enough to know if you need two vehicles or a willing friend.
🌊 Follow the coast
What it is for. Prepare a sea outing along the shore. Route calculation does not work at sea: there are no paths. This module instead builds a track that follows the coastline at a chosen distance.
How. Set a start and finish, choose the distance from the shore — 150 m or 300 m — then launch.
What the banner tells you. Nothing, if everything went well. It only speaks when there is a discrepancy to report: the track deviates more than requested from the shore, or it passes closer. This is intentional — cutting straight across a cove mechanically moves away from the shore more than the requested distance, and you need to know that.
Why not go into every cove? Because the track would become a lace that no one paddles. The tool cuts across the openings and tells you the maximum deviation.
🚣 Boat ramps
Zoom in on the area: mapped ramps, slips and landing stages appear. Placing a start point near one of them automatically snaps it and indicates it. A point placed far from any ramp is marked as "free point" — you must verify that launching there is possible and permitted.

Choose the format

One file or several
If you export several tracks at once, two options: separate files, one per track, or single file that groups them all. The single file suits a multi‑stage raid; separate files suit independent routes.
Metadata
Before export, you can fill in the track name, file name, a description and an author. The track name is what will appear on your GPS: take thirty seconds to fill it in, your device will not offer you "track‑2" in six months.
Finally click Export now. The file goes to your downloads.
📄 Route booklet PDF
Produces a printable document: the route map, elevation profile, key figures and selected points of interest. Slip it in your jersey pocket or leave it on the kitchen table for those who stay behind.
🧊 3D view
A flyover of the route in relief. Useful for visualising a mountain range before going there, and for showing someone what you plan to do. The view can also produce a flyover video.
🔗 Share a link
Creates a link that contains your session: whoever opens it finds your tracks in their own editor, and can modify them on their side without touching yours. Practical for submitting an outing project to the group.
Settings
🗺️ Map background
Eight backgrounds available. The right background depends on what you are looking for: a topographic map to read the relief, a satellite image to check that a path still exists.

📏 Units
Switches between metric (km, m, km/h) and imperial (miles, ft, mph). The setting applies everywhere: profile, statistics, PDF export.
The unit system is independent of the language. You can read the interface in English and keep kilometres — that is what the British do, by the way.
🏳 Language
Eleven languages: French, English, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Japanese. The change is immediate, without reloading, and does not affect your tracks.
On phone
The editor works on a phone, with an adapted interface. The functions are the same; they are located elsewhere.

What does not exist on phone
Only one function: ⚙️ Reshape. It requires a pointing precision that the finger cannot provide.
Tips
Turn your phone to landscape to draw: the map is wider and points are placed more precisely. Zoom in before placing a point: the more zoomed in you are, the more accurately the point falls where you want.
For preparing a long outing, the computer remains more comfortable. The phone is well suited for quick touch‑ups or consultation.
When it doesn't work
I click on the map and nothing happens.
The drawing mode is not active. First go through ✏️ Draw and choose a mode. Outside this mode, a click on the map does nothing — this is intentional, otherwise you would create points accidentally while moving the map.
The buttons in the Edit menu are greyed out.
No track is selected. Open 📋 Tracks and check the one you want to work on. Some functions, like Merge or Compare, require at least two: then enable Multi‑select.
My route won't calculate, I see ⚠️ or ❌.
The point is too far from any mapped path. Move it a few dozen metres onto a path visible on the map. Also check the profile: a mountain trail is not accessible to the Road cycling profile.
I drew my route, but the export finds nothing.
The drawing was not saved. A route being drawn is a draft until you click ✔ Confirm. This is the most frequent oversight.
My elevation gain is absurd.
See Correct elevation. In the vast majority of cases, it is the drift of your watch's barometer.
My GPS refuses the file, or takes forever to load it.
Too many points. Run the track through ✂️ Simplify with a tolerance of 10 to 20 m. You will often divide the number of points by five without the track moving visibly.
I closed the tab and lost everything.
Nothing is stored on a server, that is the principle of the tool: no account, no data retained. Export before closing. If the session had been shared via a link, the link still works.
The elevation correction barely changes anything.
This is normal if your track did not have barometric altitude: a hand‑drawn track already gets its altitude from the terrain model, there is nothing to correct.
One of my software refuses my file even though it opens everywhere else.
First check that the software is still maintained. Several old tools, discontinued by their publisher, no longer read current files correctly and will never be fixed. Before spending a long time looking at the file, check the date of the last version of the software.
The sunlight calculation runs for a long time.
This is expected: it examines the relief all around each point of the track. On a long mountain route, expect several tens of seconds. The progress bar indicates the current step.
I can't find a function on my phone.
See On phone. Search and Import are in the 📋 Tracks panel, not in the bottom bar. Only the Reshape function does not exist on mobile.
My question is not here.
Use the site's contact form. Indicate what you wanted to do, at which step it blocked, and with which device and browser. Also specify what you intend to do with the file afterwards: the problem sometimes comes from the destination software and not from the editor.
